We have robots that can reason, predict, and even work in partenership with humans and other robots. But in their interactions with the physical world, these machines have always been limited.That is changing.A group of engineers from Stanford Universitys Zhenan Bao Research Group, in partnership with Seoul National Universitys College of Engineering, has developed an artificial nerve that, when used with a robotic brain, allows robots to feel and react to external stimulus just like we do. Soon, this could become a key part of a multisensory artificial nervous ordnungsprinzip that empowers the next generation of thinking, feeling robots. The technology could also be used in prosthetic limbs to allow patients to feel and interact with their replacement body parts just as they would natural limbs.Its a complex technology, but the concept is simple. In ur skin, we have sensors that can detect even the lightest touch, neurons that transmit that touch to other parts of the body, and synapses that take that information and translate it into the feelings that we recognize and respond to.A touch on the knee first causes the muscles in that area to stretch, sending impulses up the associated neurons to the synapses, which recognize the response and sends signals to the knee muscles to contract reflexively and to the brain to recognize the sensation. We call it an involuntary reaction, but its anything but automatic.For You Making the Emotional RobotThe artificial mechanosensory nerves are composed of three essential components mechanoreceptors (resistive pressure sensors), neurons (organic ring oscillators), and synapses (organic electrochemical transistors), says Tae-Woo Lee, an associate professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Hybrid Materials at Seoul Nation al University who worked on the project. The pressure information from artificial mechanoreceptors can be converted to action potentials through artificial neurons. Multiple action potentials can be integrated into an artificial synapse to actuate biological muscles and recognize braille characters.Sandwiched inside layers of plastic, these sensors react to pressure. Image Bao Research GroupThe Bao Labs artificial system mimics human functionality by linking dozens of different pressure sensors together, creating a voltage boost between their electrodes whenever a touch is detected. This change is recognized by a ring oscillator, which converts the voltage change into a series of electrical pulses that are picked up by a third component, the synaptic transistor. The transistor translates those transmission pulses into patterns that match the patterns that organic neurons transmit in the brain.The artificial synaptic transistor is the real development in Baos work. It allows the arti ficial system to interact with natural, human systems as well as robotic brains.Wide-Ranging ApplicationsThe research, led by Zhenan Bao, a professor of chemical engineering at Stanford, was first reported in Science, and featured a video that demonstrated the systems capabilities. In the video, the Bao Lab used the technology to sense the motion of a small rod over pressure sensors. It also shows how the technology could be used to identify Braille characters by touch. Most impressively, the researchers inserted an electrode from their artificial neuron to a neuron in the body of a cockroach, using the signal to cause the insects leg to contract.This proved that the artificial nerve circuit could be embedded as part of a biological system, enabling prosthetic devices that offer better neuro integration than is currently available.Previous prosthetics usually use a pneumatic actuation of artificial muscle, which are bulky and not so dexterous, Prof. Lee says. Our artificial nerve ca n be embedded in the prosthetics aesthetically without bulky pneumatic components. We believe that our artificial nerve can operate the artificial muscle in the prosthetics more delicately and aesthetically. Most prosthetics do not have a sensing function for touch, and the conventional prosthetics require a complicated software algorithm to make the artificial muscle move. But our mechanosensory nerve can detect touch and then the output signal can be directly transmitted to actuate the muscle.There is also potential for this technology in the robotics space, explains Dr. Yeongin Kim, formerly a graduate student in the Bao Lab who worked on the artificial nerves project. In particular, it could lead to the creation of so-called soft robotics, in which robots are constructed from materials that look and feel more similar to organics. The process of mimicking the synapses and neurons of the biological nervous system in the realm of robotics could go a long way toward the development of machine learning and robots that can teach themselves new skills.The advantage of machine learning is you dont need to teach a robot every detail, Kim says. You can just make it learn a difficult job, and the robot can train on that difficult task by itself. In these cases, hardware like the artificial nervous system can be useful because of the role that synapses play in learning and sensation.In our bodies, the network of neurons and synapses can process information from the environment and control the activators that impact what we feel and how we respond, Kim says. That kind of signal processing can be useful in training what we want a robot to do and not do. This thinking is becoming popular in neuromorphic computing as well as robotic engineering, and we expect our system to provide the hardware architecture for machine learning that can be used in future neurorobots.Whatever the application, this technology is still in the early stages of development and it remains to be s een what commercial potential it holds. One goal of the work, though, is to further the development of bio-inspired materials with soft mechanical properties that can be used in sophisticated neurorobots or neuroprosthesis, performing in ways that are comparable to or even better than biological systems.Bioinspired soft robots and prosthetics can be used for people with neurological disorders and more, he says. Even before he published his wildly successful book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Dr. Covey was teaching graduate students at Brigham Young University the importance of time management and work-life balance.The first time I saw the Time Management Matrix (also known as the Four Quadrants) was on a white board in a large classroom at BYU. Dr. Covey drew a box on the board divided by a horizontal line and a vertical line into four quadrants. Across the top, he labeled the two columns Urgent and Not Urgent. Then he labeled the two rows Important and Not Important. Then he labeled the quadrants with the numbers onethrough four, starting at the top left and ending at the bottom right.Then,he asked the class to help him fill in some activities that fit into each quadrant. The first one was easy urgent and important. One student said, Cramming for your tests. He was right, it was urgent and it was important. Dr. Covey then asked, Where should we put doing the required reading and keeping up with class assignments? Students responded, Quadrant 2 important but not urgent.We next went to Quadrant 3urgent but not important. A ringing telephone was one response. Perhaps, Dr. Covey said, bu t what if it was the big job offer you had been waiting for?That is for sure a Quadrant 1 call, the student responded.When he got to Quadrant 4, activities in that quadrant came fast and furious. Talking with my roommate until 200 a.m. one suggested. Staying for the fourth quarter when BYU is ahead by 24 said another.Finally, Dr. Coveys graduate assistant passed out a paper with the four quadrants and asked us to estimate how much of the 128 hours in our week was spent in each quadrant. I had to admit that I was spending a lot of time in Quadrants 1 and 4, some in Quadrant 3, and almost none in Quadrant 2.Dr. Covey then suggested some ways that we could spend more time in Quadrant 2. Careful planning, spiritual renewal, goal setting, spending time on important relationships, journal writing, and more were all important but not urgent. No one demanded an accounting for these things. But his counsel was to plan our time so that Quadrant 2 activities came first.

I told them where and when we were to meet, and then I let them go.It was time to enjoy our last challenge.Aside from walking thelast 16 kilometers of our hike, we also knew that we had to use this final day to consolidate our individual action plans before returning to our homes. That was the only way wed be able to successfully seize the opportunities we had identified for ourselves this week.A busy morningSuch ambitious objectives and so fewkilometers left.On my own, I enjoyed the magic first hours of the day in total silence, interrupted only by the breathtaking vie ws of the valley below engulfed by mist and fog. In what felt like the blink of aneye,I covered roughlyseven kilometers, which brought me to A Susana, a small village alongside the national road. I made aquick stop for coffee and toast in the restaurant Rosende.One of the best feelings in the world is the pleasure of reuniting with your friends after youve been away for some time. Even though we had only parted a few hours ago, I was so happy when I found my fellow travelers in the cafe.It was one ofthose moments in which one clearly understands the intensity of what the group had lived during the preceding week.I once heard that we actually dont experience seven days on the Walking Mentorship. Instead, we experience something beyond normal time. We spend more than 14 hours a day on average with one another, talking, sharing, paying attention, and giving the best of ourselves. Rarely do we spend so much time with our loved ones (Which is unfortunate, and probably something to revise in our own lives.)As we approached Santiago, we had to double our attention on the road ahead of us because the yellow arrows pointing the way became extremely scarce.I had time to reflect on a few morethoughts and sing a few more songs inside my head beforethe pinnacles of the cathedral appeared in front of my eyes. I knew then that the city our final destination was no more than four kilometers away, but I also knew from my many previous walks that the first and last kilometer of any path are always liars.After crossing the bridge over the river Sar, we had to make our final pushthe steep climb up Ra do Sar and Ra do Castro Douro. We passed the arch of the Porta de Mazarelos, the only gate that remains of the old city wall, and a few minutes later, we were walking into the old town.Our journey reached its destination.I entered the Praza do Obradoiro and took a seat on the ground, where I could face the end of the road and the beginning of another route in my life.After more th an 120kilometers,we arrived atSantiago, but the personal work we had been doingalong the way was truly just starting.The next step was to detail the implications ofourfuture strategies in the short and medium terms and how we weregoing to operationalize them with clear action plans. Even with thousands of people around, it was easy to stay focused on theshining smiles of my traveling friends a moment sealed in silence and deep happiness.The afternoon in Santiago gave us agreat opportunity to break down ourindividual initiatives into sets of actionable tasks that we could each follow as we returned to our lives and strove to be better.After the traditional power nap, each of uswalked around, got lost in the different corners and alleys of the magnificent town, and lay down on the grass of many different parks.Some opted to have a quiet talk inside the cathedral.Our journey was drawing close to an end, and it was time to collect all the pieces of the puzzle we had been gathering alon g the way.Many of the thoughts and ideas we end up revisiting are old friends in a way, but if we dare to challenge them, we might discover new angles to explore.Each route is unique and unrepeatable, even when we return again and again, but the signs (remember the yellow arrows) are always inthe same places, indicating the direction we must follow.Now, on the way back home, I feel a mixture of feelings happy to return to my family, friends, and work, but also nostalgic for the long walks in silence and the connections I createdwith the others participants, who are now my new friends.I hope you enjoyed following our literal and metaphoricaljourneys, and I thank you for making it even more unique by sharing your comments during the last week.I hope you end up repeating some of the exercises we did. Things go really nahe daran sein and its hard for us to keep up, and were never going to achieve a one-to-one balance, Crenshaw said. But what we can do is we can find the right pace of life, the right amount of time that we work, and the right amount of time that we need to take a break, in order for work to be productive.Everyone has their own rhythm.For some people, that is going to be a very fast pace of life, and for others, its going to be a more relaxed pace. The question is finding out what your rhythm is.Crenshaw uses a few concepts to achieve work-life rhythm.The line-in-the-sand theoryThe line is the sand in a boundary, a way of saying what you will not do. For example, your line in the sand might be that you will stop working at six oclock, and absolutely stop checking emails from home after 8 pm.The line in the sand says, There is a line which I will not cross, a point in the day where Im giving myself permission to turn off the phone, to turn off the email, explained Crenshaw. Without that permission, people will work as long as it takes. If you give yourself permission to work as long as it takes, guess what happens? Youre going to work late, long hours. That s not productive.Having a boundary, he says, means that to finish on time, youre going to have to be more focused. Im going to have to reduce the amount of interruptions that Im causing for myself or that others are causing for me.Boundaries boost creativity and qualityIts almost like a game, said Crenshaw. It creates an opportunity to look for new things and be more creative and do work in a different way. Constraints are surprisingly effective at helping people their work.Dont forget to have funHaving fun is critical to effective productivity, said Crenshaw. Its purpose in work and play is two-pronged Having fun is essential to not just feeling happy, but also productivity.Unfortunately, Crenshaw said, a lot of people put fun as their last priority and only if they can fit it in.It should be a top priority, he said. In fact, when youre scheduling your year, vacation should be one of the very first things that you schedule because then you have to work around it.But vacations aren t just yearly, said Crenshaw. They should come in bursts. Monthly, daily, weekly, you want to have little pockets of fun. They should function like mini oases.An oasis is a moment in that journey where you get refreshed, Crenshaw said. Well, you can put little oases into your day and into your week. Even if its just for five minutes where you say, This is my sanctuary from the rest of the day. Im going to spend five minutes watching funny videos on YouTube. That five minutes is so powerful on either side. One, because you know that the break is coming and its going to provide a relief. Then afterward, because it provided a relief youre more productive.Not only is it good for you, but its good for your work.When you take these breaks to have fun, no matter how you define fun, your productivity increases. Your ability to feel happiness, and your ability to feel that work-life balance improves significantly.More work does not equal more productivityUltimately, Crenshaw says, in order t o achieve work-life rhythm, we have to let go of the idea that working harder means that we are more productive.There is so much guilt and so much pressure in our society to continue to be busy, he said.Were not rats in a maze, but yet, so many of us treat ourselves as if we are. Were depriving ourselves of those moments, thinking that were being more productive when in fact, were going to get worse and worse.Its not a matter of being lazy, its a matter of being smart. When you take time off on a consistent basis not all the time, but on a regular interval, thats smart. You will get things done.
